Nigerian Stowaway found dead in the undercarriage of South African Airways Aircraft At Dulles Airport,Washington

At the Dulles International Airport in Washington DC, it was discovered that there was a fault with the landing gear of the South-Africa Airways aircraft A340-300 which needed immediate attention.

It led to SAA dispatching its engineers and technicians to the US to identify the cause and to fix the fault on the aircraft.

During the process of conducting tests on the aircraft, SAA engineers discovered a human body in the centre wheel well”.

The suspected stowaway was found frozen to death in the undercarriage of a South African Airline passenger jet at Dulles Airport in Washington, after the plane landed from Senegal.

The man, identified only as Chris Dikeh, with a Nigerian Passport and in his mid-30s, is believed to have frozen in temperatures around -60°C.

Airport authorities say the male body was recovered from the landing gear of the Airbus A340 belonging to South African Airways. The flight arrived in Dulles on Wednesday last week.

Stella Damasus shares words of encouragement

Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus, shared some words of encouragement to the down-trodden.

Here’s what she wrote:
“Some have mocked me, laughed at me, and even said I was not worth it. They have said I am not pretty enough, my nose is not straight enough, and my lips are too thick, my eyes are too small; trust me they have laughed at my legs, my round face and huge cheeks.
I smile through it all because I know that the one who formed, moulded and created me, is the perfect one who never makes mistakes. I love me and I love the God who created me and called me his child. He says I am beautiful no matter what they say.
I encourage to stand up, look at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself that your creator never makes mistakes. Remind yourself that the God we serve is beautiful and so if you were created in his own image, then guess what…..  (gistus)

Fashola, Sanusi, el-Rufai and the APC

WHEN Sanusi Lamido Sanusi lost his job, and chose to head for Lagos rather than Abuja where he has a home, many did not read much meaning into it, until it emerged that he was to be received by the All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftains led by, none other than  Mallam Nasir el Rufai, in posh cars made available by prominent Lagosians.

That singular act confirmed stories that had  made the rounds in exclusive circles that some of the chieftains of the party had met with the financial rabble rouser in one of the financial capitals of the world, and perfected a grand plan to ruffle Abuja’s feathers, as a step to gain political capital and preparatory to his joining the party.

Either he neglected to tell them about his alleged financial misdemeanours or he told them and the plot was to get him out there, make so much noise about the always-tainted Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, so that any disciplinary measure against him would be seen as persecution.
But he succeeded halfway as it has now emerged he operated a house muddied by alleged financial recklessness.  To think that President Goodluck Jonathan had this information since June last year and did nothing about it is, to say the least, either an evidence of his naivety or a large-heartedness that is not for a clime like ours.

It is much more confounding that with all this information, Jonathan tried persuading the ‘Emperor’ of Nigeria’s financial institutions to resign but rebuffed him and perhaps told the story of his encounter with the President on phone to THISDAY newspapers that carried it weeks ago.  It is therefore no wonder that, now that the APC deep-throat in government has fallen from his high horse, those presenting warped logic over his sack are apologists from the APC.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, said: “You see, I don’t understand this kind of economic management. If the man is going in June, there must be a sense in which messaging about executive tampering with the independence of the Central Bank has economic consequences for investor positioning.  This is not a suspension; it’s a sack really because it’s only there’s no power to sack him and they have looked and looked and looked and they have said: we suspend. It’s a sack really.  The message you are sending out is that it is better to keep quiet about corruption.  That’s what it seems to me.”
Is that so, Governor Fashola?   Would he dare take on Tinubu the way Sanusi took on Jonathan?  We all know he would be impeached within the five working days of the week; so, stop pontificating.  Fashola said further: “For me really, if someone in my government tells me that some money is missing and without concluding any investigation, they suspended the person who blew the whistle. It is when the audit is concluded that they can now decide what to do to the man.

But now, before the completion of the audit, they have sacked the man who alerted the head of the government that money is missing.”
Interesting! Why not hire an audit firm from Chicago to audit the tax system in Lagos State since he became governor and see whether Lagosians, at least the true ones, will allow him sit in Alausa, and continue to report to that godfather of his.  And who, except Sanusi, is saying that money is missing?  In the legal profession where he comes from, does the word of one inconsistent loud talking banker confirm a misdeed, even if there was one?

“So what message is the Presidency sending out to Nigerians on corruption and others who may want to reveal any atrocity committed in the country?” you asked sir, and you went ahead to answer the same question thus: “The message the Presidency is sending out is that Nigerians should keep quiet whenever they see any corruption perpetrated in the country.

That is not a good sign for the economy.”
Your Excellency, you are completely wrong, and if your sense of history does not serve you well, I will remind you that no one in all our history has been able to cow us as has been done in other climes, even Western ones.

You want an example, Sir? I will give you only one: Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.  He has been running riot with his mouth for the past three years like a political governor rather than a financial one who should not rock the boat of state; but remained there because the President, for some inexplicable reason, trusted him and knew Nigerians wanted a breed like him.  But it got into his head, and if you read the papers with their deluge of his alleged financial recklessness, should we also say it got into his pocket?

Governor Fashola, please, remove your APC toga for a few minutes and answer this question: Should such a man have been retained?  Should the amiable Lagos Governor not be aware, may be it would be necessary for him to be told that the President had been told since the first week of June last year, a clear eight months and three weeks ago, to fire the man and his deputies.

As a newspaper put it: “The decision to suspend the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Sanusi Lamido, was based on a report of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria dated June 7, 2013.

The report was made after a review of Sanusi’s response to the query issued to him by the President over the apex bank’s financial statement of 2012. His response was dated May 20, 2013.

“According to a copy of the report obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, the council indicates that the explanation provided by the suspended CBN governor is ‘a clear display of incompetence, nonchalance, fraud, wastefulness, and abuse of due process and deliberate efforts to misrepresent facts on the part of the leadership of the CBN.’

The council advised the President to exercise the powers conferred on him by Section 11(2)(f) of the CBN Act 2007 or invoke Section 11(2)(c) of the said Act ‘and cause the governor and the deputy governors to cease from holding office in the CBN’.”

What more is there to say about this prince of Kano who rattled about like a commoner and acted in very un-princely ways? Those things that have propelled him to engage in a macabre dance will fully unravel in the next few weeks or months, no doubt.

Apple’s reputation for software security a ‘myth’

A "scary" software flaw that has put users of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers at risk of being hacked has dealt a blow to the reputation of Apple, the world’s most valuable brand, say security researchers.

Apple security flaw: what you need to know Tech watchers say this bug — which Apple quietly announced on Friday — illustrates that the company’s reputation for strong security may be overstated.

"People in general feel, 'It's Apple, so it's secure'," says Brian Bourne, co-founder of Toronto's annual SecTor cybersecurity conference.

“Whereas the truth is that Apple operates within the same bounds as every other software provider, so they’re just as likely to have security vulnerabilities as anybody else.” Johannes Ullrich, dean of research for the Internet Storm Center, which monitors online threats, goes even further: he calls Apple’s security reputation “a myth.”

Apple’s latest security flaw became public on Friday when it released iOS 7.0.6, explaining that the newest version of its mobile operating system had fixed a bug pertaining to safe browsing. In explaining the flaw, Apple said that "an attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS."

SSL/TLS is an encryption standard that enables a web browser to talk to a web server to verify that a site is not a fake set up by hackers to steal personal information on your computer or hand-held device.

It's used by banks, credit card companies and government agencies to keep transactions secure. The iOS bug interfered with this process, making it difficult for applications such as Apple’s Safari browser to confirm that web sites were legitimate.

Popularity breeds vulnerability In a blog post entitled “Why Apple's Recent Security Flaw Is So Scary,” Gizmodo managing editor Brian Barrett said the bug makes Apple users vulnerable to a so-called “man in the middle attack.”

That type of cryptographic attack involves an attacker eavesdropping on communications between your browser and a given website, including anything from private conversations to financial information.

As a result of this bug, “someone could trick you into connecting to a lookalike website and you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at the SSL information coming back from that website,” says Ullrich. SecTor's Bourne says that Apple’s reputation for security is largely due to the fact that its operating system is more restrictive in what it allows installed software programs to do.

But consumer fascination with mobile products such as the iPhone and the iPad has made Apple a more desirable target for hackers, says Urs Hengartner, an associate professor in the University of Waterloo's computer science department at the University of Waterloo.

“Many of the [hacking] exploits are deployed and developed by criminals who make money, so they go after the popular platforms,” he says. When it comes to Apple products, “we haven’t seen that many security flaws, at least not public ones," says Hengartner.

But he echoes the feeling of many in the software community, who say that when Apple does identify a problem in its code, it is slow to respond with an update. A turning point? Bourne estimated that this recent, problematic version of Apple’s iOS has been “on the street since October," when the company introduced a patch to fix problems with the launch of its new operating system.

With the latest release of iOS 7.0.6, Apple said it had fixed the bug on mobile devices, but the problem still exists for OS X, which is the operating system for Mac computers. In a statement about that outstanding problem, Apple said, “We are aware of this issue and already have a software fix that will be released very soon.”

Bourne notes that Apple does not have a sterling reputation in the cybersecurity community, which congregates on websites and online forums to report bugs and share proposed fixes. “I think most people who try to report [software] vulnerabilities to Apple have been frustrated,” says Bourne.

“They don’t engage in the security community in the same way” as other companies, particularly Microsoft, which actively confers with the community to identify bugs and fix them quickly. In terms of security, Microsoft has made great strides in the last decade, says Bourne.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Microsoft was issuing so many security patches to its operating systems that they gave it a name: “Patch Tuesdays,” which took place on the second Tuesday of every month.

Ulrich says that a key moment for Microsoft was the Blaster worm, a computer virus that infected machines running Windows XP and Windows 2000 in August 2003. The scope of the infection forced Microsoft to focus greater attention on the security of its operating systems, he says.

Hengartner thinks with the latest iOS security flaw, Apple may be reaching a similar point. “They’re in the same situation that Microsoft was 10 to 15 years ago,” he says. cbc.ca

vanguardngr.comGOVERNORS under the aegis of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF yesterday condemned in very strong terms, the suspension of governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, describing the move as an attempt by President Goodluck Jonathan to divert from the fight against corruption.

Jonathan Calls On Boko Haram To Surrender

The Federal Government has once again called on members of the Boko Haram sect to lay down their arms and engage government in a constructive manner to address their grievances.

President Goodluck Jonathan made the call at an international seminar on the Imperatives of Observance of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Norms in Internal Security holding at the National Defence College, Abuja.

The president also recalled the directives to the service chiefs to ensure that relevant human rights are emphasised in the training of members of the armed forces in the fight against insurgency.

He however expressed regret that the Boko Haram sect does not feel obliged to basic tenets of human rights, describing them as “brutal and removed from modern civilization,” killing innocent citizens at will.

He said the military was called in to support and restore normalcy but regretted that sometimes such engagements have had negative effects. He however said that government will do all it can to ensure that any allegation of human rights abuse on the part of security operatives will be appropriately addressed. (channelstv)
