Osun APC: ‘Omisore Lost Fair And Square’

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Saturday’s governorship poll, Senator Iyiola Omisore, lost “fairly”.

The party was reacting to Omisore’s remarks that his defeat to Rauf Aregbesola of APC was due to the damage done to him and his party by the former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Rufus Akeju.

Omisore said: “We had a situation where a clearly partisan REC had opened the entire electoral system to our opponent from the registration stage through data storage to personnel loading… Before he left, he did a lot of harm in the system that would take years to rectify”.

But in a statement yesterday by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, APC said: “To accuse the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Akeju, especially, is the hallmark of a man in delusional stupor. He has not been able to climb down from his high horse of living a lie.

Untested Ebola therapies 'ethical'

Experimental therapies unproven as safe for human use can be offered to Ebola patients provided certain conditions are met, a World Health Organisation-convened panel has recommended in an effort to curtail the worst recorded outbreak of the disease.

West Africa is experiencing the most severe and complex outbreak of Ebola in history and if certain conditions are met - such as informed consent - it is ethical to offer "unproven" interventions, the panel of ethicists, medical experts and lay people concluded.

The panel said research efforts had been invested in developing drugs and vaccines for the disease over the past decade with some showing "promising" results in the laboratory, but they had not yet been evaluated for safety in human beings.

"In the particular circumstances of this outbreak, and provided certain conditions are met, the panel reached consensus that it is ethical to offer unproven interventions with as yet unknown efficacy and adverse effects, as potential treatment or prevention," the UN health agency said in a statement.

Nigeria 2015 Polls: Jonathan Will win

By Terhemba Daka

Simon Imobo-Twswam is the national coordinator of the pro-Goodluck Jonathan group, Friends Of Our Nation, Democracy, Equity, Reason & Social Justice, (FOUNDERS) A former newspaper editor, Imobo-Twswam was, at various times, news editor of many national dailies, including Daily Trust and Leadership. Imobo-Twswam, now a pastor, spoke with TERHEMBA DAKA in Abuja on why FOUNDERS, is mobilizing support for President Jonathan's re-election bid in 2015.

Interview

You were in the media and without notice you just quit. Are you missing the industry?
Yes, I was in the media and worked in a number of newspaper houses, but it is not true that I left without notice. Could one totally leave the profession? I believe the newsroom has its own unique appeal; the thrill of news hunting, the excitement of being on top of a story, the exhilaration of a scoop, the creative tension of the deadline hour, the pure pleasure of seeing the news-copy ahead of your reader. This is why people say once a journalist, always a journalist.

What does FOUNDERS stand for? Is it another pro-Goodluck Jonathan outfit as it is being alleged?
We are not a pro-Goodluck Jonathan outfit per se. We have come out to take a stand for our country, Nigeria, our democracy; yes, we have come out to take a stand for reason, responsible politics as well as social justice. So on the surface, we may appear like another pro-Goodluck Jonathan group, but from a deeper look, we are a pro-Nigerian group, and we stand for all that is best for our dear country at this point in time.

Osun Governorship Poll: A Robbery Of The Highest Degree - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore have expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Osun State governorship election held on Saturday, describing it as “a robbery of the highest order.”

Omisore said the outcome of the election did not reflect the wishes of the people of the state, and vowed to challenge the result at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The state chairman of the party, Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa, in a statement in Osogbo, yesterday, said the PDP would challenge the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Olaoluwa said the election was characterised by malpractices in many parts of the state, especially Osogbo and Ilesa.

He said the party had met and resolved that the results of the election be challenged at the tribunal, adding that the legal team of the party under the leadership of Chief Sunday Ojo-Williams met on the development and was already consulting with those that matter.

Read his statement in part:
“The PDP in Osun State reject the outcome of the last Saturday’s election in its totality and we are ready to contest it until the peoples mandate, which was stolen is returned.”

My Message To Jonathan, PDP - Aregbesola

Osun State governor elect, Rauf Aregbesola, has described his victory in Saturday’s election as a “strong message” to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) adding “no might is powerful enough to thwart the will of the people”.

Aregbesola who made the statement after being declared winner of the Osun governorship election on Sunday morning expressed reservations on the massive security deployment for the poll, describing it as unnecessarily tense, tortuous and traumatic.

The governor warned that nobody or party must  exercise power unreasonably at any level except in accordance with the will of the people.

Read his statement in part:
“Our victory is due to the steadfastness and resolute determination of our people to assert and defend their rights. The PDP obviously did all it could in a most desperate manner to steal the people’s mandate.”

Barcelona say Vermaelen not ready to train

Barcelona’s new signing Thomas Vermaelen has an injured right hamstring and will not begin to train with the first team, the Spanish club said Monday.

The 28-year old Belgium international defender, who completed his move to Barcelona from Arsenal on Sunday, picked up the injury during the World Cup in Brazil, the club said in a statement.

Vermaelen will undergo physiotherapy, it added. “His presence in training sessions will depend on how his recovery progresses,” Barcelona said.

Vermaelen, who had been at Arsenal for five years, and captain for the past two seasons, said during his presentation at the Nou Camp on Sunday that he wanted to draw a line under an injury-plagued spell.
“I want to put the injuries I have had behind me and look to the future. My aim is to play in lots of games and help the team,” he said.

“Last year was tough, but I want to start from zero and I am sure I’ll have a fantastic season here at Barcelona.”

Vermaelen made only 21 appearances last season as niggling injuries and the form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker limited his impact.

Osun Election: Why Aregbesola won

IT is no longer news that Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) comfortably beat Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to retain his seat for another 48 months in power in weekend’s Osun State polls. What perhaps is news is the avalanche of reasons for Aregbesola’s convincing victory.

The reasons include: Aregbesola’s modest performance in the last four years; mismanagement of crisis in the PDP and failure to pacify aggrieved leaders like former governors Isiaka Adeleke and Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who had to defect to the APC; failure of the PDP to make capital out of the religious card occasioned by

Aregbesola’s re-classification of schools; Aregbesola’s deft grassroots support; Omisore’s Bola Ige’s baggage; the governor’s work in Osogbo; and APC’s loss in Ekiti, which served as a wake-up call leading the leaders to apply useful lessons learnt from the Ekiti episode where PDP’s Ayo Fayose beat APC’s Governor Kayode Fayemi.

This came as Presidency, yesterday, described last Saturday as a very painful day for it and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, following the victory of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in that day’s gubernatorial election.
