Why judge sentenced slain banker Titilayo’s husband to death

Justice Lateefat Okunnu of the Ikeja High Court, on Friday, convicted Akolade Arowolo who murdered his wife, Titilayo, at their Isolo residence in 2011. In sentencing Mr. Arowolo to death, the judge said that the prosecution proved their case beyond reasonable doubt and established that the defendant was responsible for his wife’s death.

Mrs. Okunnu said that she reached her verdict by relying on the evidences of the pathologist who conducted a post-mortem examination on the deceased’s corpse, the parents of the convict who were “not witnesses of truth”, and the contradictory statements of the convict. She also relied on the “Doctrine of the Last Scene” which stipulates that the last person at a crime scene bears full responsibility for the deceased. “It serves to buttress the finding that the defendant and no one else is the culprit,” Mrs. Okunnu added.

As the judge pronounced her sentence, Mr. Arowolo fell in the dock and burst into tears, screaming “who would take care of my little daughter?” The trial of Mr. Arowolo, 32, began in 2011 after the prosecution accused him of stabbing to death his wife, a banker, on June 24, 2011 at their residence at 8, Akindeinde St., Isolo, Lagos.

No Igbo presidential candidate in 2015 —Gov Orji

Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, has said Ndigbo would not field any presidential candidate in 2015. According to Orji, any presidential hopeful from the South East geopolitical zone planning to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan will be embarking on a futile mission, as the zone is solidly behind the President.

The governor said this in Umuahia when he received a delegation of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Lagos branch, who were on a fact finding and courtesy visit to the state. Orji said as long as President Jonathan would run for second term in 2015, he remained best bet for Ndigbo and should, therefore, not be distracted.

However, Orji noted that there might be opportunistic aspirants who might join the race to bargain for positions but warned that it would not work for them in 2015.

Obama to host Dalai Lama at White House

US President Barack Obama will meet exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Friday, US officials say. China has urged the US to cancel the meeting, saying it will "seriously impair China-US relations".  Officials say the US does not support Tibetan independence but is concerned about human rights in China. The two men last met in 2011, in talks that angered China. Tibet is governed as an autonomous region in China. China has been widely accused of repressing political and religious freedoms in Tibet.

Reps Divided Over Sanusi’s Removal

The chambers of the House of Representatives was charged yesterday over the decision of the president, Goodluck Jonathan, to suspend the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. While some members of the House declared the move as illegal and unconstitutional, others were of the view that it was in order. ‎

Minority whip of the House, Hon Samson Osagie (APC, Edo) had brought the suspension matter before the members during plenary under Matters of Urgent National Interest where he described the suspension as “illegal” and “unconstitutional.” Citing CBN Act 2007 as amended, the lawmaker queried the power of the president to take such a decision as the law does not provide for the president or any body to suspend the governor of the CBN.

Balotelli: Bust-ups are part of life

The AC Milan striker says that people in Italy are more accepting of his confrontational nature than the English were during his spell with Manchester City
Mario Balotelli believes that people need to stop making a big deal out of his tendency to get involved in altercations on the training ground.

The AC Milan striker has had some much-publicised issues with coaches and team-mates in the past, most notably with former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini, but he claims that these are simply a natural part of any working environment.

And the 23-year-old suggests that the lack of such headlines in recent times reflects a difference in attitudes between different countries.

Sanusi’s suspension is a war against transparency and accountability – Buhari

As mixed reactions continue to greet the suspension of the CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, former Head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari has described it as a total war against transparency.

General Buhari, who reacted via his Facebook page averred that the suspension of Sanusi is “an official declaration of war against transparency and accountability by a regime that is morally bankrupt and seriously wanting in credibility and trust.”

According to the former presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 presidential election, “When the President stunned world leaders that corruption is not Nigeria’s problem at the World Economic Forum in Davos early this year, none understood him.

“Now the meaning of that statement has become crystal clear as the government embarks on a campaign of persecution targeted at government officials who stood against vested interests.”

He stressed that “this impunity did not start today; when Justice Ayo Salami stood against judicial and electoral fraud, he was extra-legally removed from office in contravention of the principles of separation of power and due process. Now the CBN governor is condemned to similar maltreatment for standing against financial and economic fraud”.

“This is a harbinger of the arbitrariness and executive high-handedness that are to come if this government steals its way back to power come 2015.

The choice before Nigerians is never this clearer; either we do away with this predatory kleptocracy that is committed to denying ourselves and the next generation of our citizens a decent Nigeria, or we helplessly watch as it perfects the betrayal of our common destiny and share the ignominy of a failed generation,” he added. The many sins of Lamido Sanusi

The Presidency yesterday explained that the suspension of the Governor of Central Bank, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has nothing to do with his recent appearance at the Senate where he made startling allegations against the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati said his suspension was in connection with his recklessness and violation of extant laws of the Land.

Dr Abati who addressed state House correspondents to clear the air on the rumour making rounds that the Presidency was not comfortable with Sanusi’s recent utterances noted that “the president has had to take this decision as part of attempt to strengthen the CBN to ensure that the apex bank continues to be symbol for prudence, integrity and accountability”.

According to Abati, “Last year when the CBN submitted its financial statement for the year ended 31st December 2012, a query was raised about some of the issues in the financial statement and the CBN governor was asked to offer some clarification with regards to these issues.

I did Not Abandone My daughter - Saheed Balogun

Nollywood Yoruba actor, Saheed Balogun, last week was accused on internet that he abandoned his first child, Zainat, when he found fame and got married to Fathia. Saheed was said to have deflowered, impregnated and abandoned Zainat’s mother, Sherifat Yusuf, when she was pregnant and she had placed a curse on him.

Obviously irked by the report, Saheed, took to his instagram and shared this photograph below, with the caption “My first born Zainat, my son Khalid and myself during #ILEYA Festival in #Lagos October 2013.”

He also took to his Facebook page, and posted this: “Some are born CONSTRUCTIVE and CREATIVE while others are born DESTRUCTIVE and OBSTRUCTIVE.
Some people will go to absurd lengths to make money by passing WRONG and MISLEADING information to the public.

These same people will pick up a pen and write that our present leaders are misinforming people and fraudulent.

The irony is that if these same people are elected to a position of power, they will be EVEN WORSE than our present leaders! ARISE NIGERIA! ARISE MY PEOPLE! LONG LIVE NIGERIA!”.

Stop sending girl-child for imaginary ‘deliverance’ – Fayemi’s wife warns parents

Wife of Ekiti State governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, has cautioned parents against exposing their girl-child to sexual predators while seeking imaginary spiritual cleansing, otherwise known as deliverance.

She said many under-aged girls have unwittingly become sex slaves while being held captive by the so-called religious leaders, leading to pregnancy and fatal abortions.

The First Lady disclosed these at a stakeholders’ forum on the prevention of teenage pregnancy, organized by the Women Health and Action Research Centre, in collaboration with the Ekiti Development Foundation, in Ado-Ekiti, on Tuesday.

Erelu Bisi Fayemi said, “When you send your girl-child to all these spiritual homes for imaginary deliverance, they become exposed to illicit sex by the so-called religious leaders expected to ‘deliver’ or heal them.

“While I will not cast aspersions at any religion, I want to charge you parents to learn to intercede on your children’s behalf.

Who says your prayers will not be answered if you closet yourself and pray to God.

Genevieve Nnaji and Mikel Obi spotted together in South-Africa

Pretty actress, Genevieve Nnaji, and Footballer, Mikel Obi were both spotted entering a private jet today in South-Africa. They both arrived in different customised flashy cars.

They took photographs and the photographs look fabulous, but no- one really knows what the pair are doing in South-Africa. It seems to be a well guarded secret.

Some rumours have it that the pair are dating, but I think that is unlikely. It might be some kind of publicity stunt, maybe a photo-shoot to advertise a product or something like that.

Rather than speculating, let me show you the photographs, but as the story behind the photographs unfold, I’ll keep you updated. Here they are:

Nigeria Airtel ownership controversy: Econet floors Bharti-Airtel at Appeal Court

Econet Wireless International remains a bonafide stakeholder in Airtel Nigeria, the Appeal court sitting in Lagos ruled on Monday. The ruling appears to have dealt a blow on the quest by Bharti Airtel, the parent company of Airtel Nigeria, to get the rulings of two lower courts quashed over attempts by Econet Wireless International to reacquire its stakes in the company.

In its judgment on February 14, the Appeal Court in Lagos said Bharti Airtel failed in its bid to get the ruling of a lower court on the disposal of some shares the telecom firm set aside.

The court had held that an International Tribunal acted properly with its verdict that the sale of 65 per cent of the Nigerian business unit to its predecessor, Zain of Kuwait, was null and void, as it did not follow proper procedures.

Panty Protests In Russia And Kazakhstan Sparked By Lace Lingerie Ban

A trade ban on lacy lingerie has Russian consumers and their neighbors with their knickers in a twist. The ban will outlaw any underwear containing less than 6 percent cotton from being imported, made, or sold in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. And it has struck a chord in societies where La Perla and Victoria's Secret are panty paradises compared to Soviet-era cotton underwear, which was often about as flattering and shapely as drapery.

On Sunday, 30 women protesters in Kazakhstan were arrested and thrown into police vans while wearing lace underwear on their heads and shouting "Freedom to panties!"
The ban in those three countries was first outlined in 2010 by the Eurasian Economic Commission, which regulates the customs union, and it won't go into effect until July 1.

But a consumer outcry against it already is reaching a fever pitch. Photographs comparing sexy modern underwear to outdated, Soviet goods began spreading on Facebook and Twitter on Sunday, as women and men alike railed against the prospective changes.

Malabu Oil Deal: Reps Order Cancellation Of OPL 245

The House of Representatives has called for the outright cancellation of the award of OPL 245 to Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd (SNEPCO) (50 per cent) and Agip (50 per cent) for identified flaws in the resolution agreement among Malabu Oil and Gas, SNEPCO and Nigeria Agip Exploration Ltd (NAE) with the federal government acting as obligor. OPL 245 is currently considered the biggest and richest oil well in the country, with proceeds capable of servicing the country’s debt for the next 30 years.

This is just as the legislators directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute all individuals and financial institutions linked with and found culpable of receiving and transferring unlawfully with respect to the OPL 245 deal.

This was contained in the report of the adhoc committee that investigated OPL 245 Malabu deal led by Hon. Leo Ogor.
The report, whose consideration was spiced with opposition to its recommendations by some members, also stated that Agip (NAE) be formally censored or reprimanded by the House for its role in the resolution agreement which lacked transparency and did not meet international best business practices.

“The resolution agreement was meant to resolve existing disputes between the various parties, which even by AGIP’s acknowledgement they are not party to the disputes; in the process, they cornered 50 per cent equity in block 245,” the resolution read.

Obasanjo clears air on ‘k-leg’ comment made about Amaechi in 2007

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that he is still very relevant in Nigeria politics despite rumours that he wants to opt out. Obasanjo also cleared the air on the controversial popular comment he made during a campaign in Port Harcourt for the 2007 gubernatorial election in Rivers State, where he said the situation in the state as at then had “K-leg”.

He said there is always something peculiar about politics in Rivers State.
Former President Obasanjo made the disclosure during his working visit to Rivers State. He affirmed that he was amused when the lower court dismissed Amaechi’s suit but that he was glad when the Supreme Court upheld that Amaechi is the authentic Governor of the state.

While appreciating the courage of Amaechi, he advised him to continue to take every necessary action that will better the lives of Rivers people.

“As a leader, when I have something that requires action, that action must be taken, if not, I am not a worthy leader.

Way Out If You Find Yourself In A Sexless Marriage

The longer a couple goes without being intimate, the more ambivalence they will feel. It’s like a vicious cycle, and this only increases the lack of trust, the awkwardness and the subsequent distancing. Resistance to talking about the problems and to exploring ways to be intimate only puts greater stress on the relationship.

If your marriage is suffering from a lack of sex, consider these tips to help get the intimacy back into your relationship.

 1. Rule out medical problems.

First, it’s necessary to medically rule out physical causes such as side effects of chronic illness or medications as well as age-related issues. Sexual problems in marriage can also be related to incompatibility in sex drives. The contributing factors are not insurmountable.

 2. Think about counseling.

A sexless marriage is usually a sign of more serious problems in the relationship—lack of trust, unresolved anger, deep resentment, one partner having an affair or with one foot emotionally out of the marriage. If efforts to discuss the problems are too uncomfortable, frustrating or going nowhere, seeing a couples’ therapist may very well shed some light on the problems.

3. Know each other’s needs.

Compatibility of goals—both inside and outside the bedroom—is important, as well as the freedom to talk about what the partners both need and want. For some couples, control and withholding sex is one way to have the upper hand. If other problems in the relationship aren’t attended to, the anger and hurt take away the desire to be close or even try to make it work.

4. Consider gender differences.

Another contributing factor can be the hard wiring differences that surface between men and women around a lot of issues—communication, support, problem solving and, yes, sex too.

Men often view sex as the intimacy in a relationship and making love is when they feel closest to their partner. Women, on the other hand, need to feel the intimacy before opening themselves up emotionally.

It takes some understanding of these dynamics and a willingness to work together so both partners can feel loved and satisfied. huffingtonpost.com

5 celebrities who are also art projects

In recent weeks, Shia LaBeouf has fought to be taken seriously as an
actor art project (and prove that he is famous yet not famous). He is not the first celebrity to attempt to transcend humanity by becoming a work of art, but he is, by far, the least likable of those to do so (that’s what happens when you plagiarize!). Here are five other celebrities who are considerably better at dividing their time between emitting carbon and being a canvas:

N4.7 billion fraud: Babalakin’s trial stalled

An ankle injury sustained by the lawyer representing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday forced a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja to adjourn the trial of embattled billionaire lawyer, Wale Babalakin, till March 14.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rotimi Jacobs, told the court he sprained his ankle in an accident last week.

“I am unable to undertake the business of the day due to the unfortunate incident.

I humbly request for an adjournment,” said Mr. Rotimi, who limped into the court room.

In granting the prosecution’s request, Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo said that he was “bending over backwards” to schedule the next date on a Friday.

Co-Pilot Hijacks Plane As Pilot Goes To Toilet

An Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked his own plane, bound for Rome, and flew it to Geneva where he is now seeking asylum. The man, an Ethiopian, seized control of the Boeing 767 when the Italian pilot went to the toilet. Flight ET702 with 202 passengers and crew on board had taken off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The rope used by the co-pilot to leave the plane After landing in the Swiss city at about 5am, the co-pilot used a rope to climb down from a cockpit window. He surrendered to police and asked for asylum in Switzerland. Officials said no one on the flight was injured and passengers had not been aware of the hijack.

Police spokesman Pierre Grangean said: "Just after landing, the co-pilot came out of the cockpit and ran to the police and said, 'I'm the hijacker.' He said he is not safe in his own country and wants asylum." Swiss federal authorities are now investigating the incident and are set to press charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years. FlightRadar 24 - an app for mobile devices - showed the flight circling over Geneva several times before landing.
The plane had about 20 minutes of fuel left The Boeing 767-300 plane had 20 minutes of fuel left when it landed. It was eventually guided to the runway by two Italian fighter planes. Robert Deillon, chief executive of Geneva airport, said: "So this co-pilot put in the code for 'I just hijacked the aircraft'. As the plane was over Italy at the time, two Italian Eurofighters were scrambled to accompany it." Sky's Harriet Hadfield, in Geneva, said the airport had not yet opened when the plane hit the runway - and passengers had to wait until it did before disembarking.
The plane had been on its way to Rome when it was hijacked She said: "It must have been a very terrifying experience for the passengers on board. "It seems to have been the case that passengers had to wait until the airport opened. Happily there are no injuries but it must have been a very, very frightening experience." On why the co-pilot might have been seeking asylum, Human Rights Watch says Ethiopia's human rights record "has sharply deteriorated" over the years. There were numerous hijackings with asylum demands during the 1990s. news.sky.com

In Uganda And Nigeria Homosexuality Is Banned

Some 3,000 kilometres separate the capitals of Uganda and Nigeria, but on the issue of homosexuality and law you can hardly fit a slim legal document between them.

The leaders of both countries believe that homosexuality is a sickness; one says it might exist in the West because of "abnormal breeding".

When such scientifically stupid views come from the top, it's no surprise that ordinary people take that as encouragement to carry out pogroms against gay people.

In the Ugandan capital, Kampala, Parliament is poised to enable tougher anti-gay laws. These will not only result in a witch hunt for homosexuals, it could cause a rift between Uganda and the United States.

APC Registration In Oyo: Court Fixes Feb 25 for hearing

Counsel to other defendants, however, asked for an adjournment on the grounds that they had just been informed about the case by their clients.

Scarcity of Petrol: Kwara Warns Against Panic Buying As Queues Re-surface In Iseyin

Kwara State Government on Monday called on residents of the state to refrain from panic buying of petrol following reports of scarcity of the product.

Alhaji Lawal Isiaka, Special Assistant to the Governor on Petroleum Monitoring, said that there was no reason for panic buying.

“The vandalised pipeline on Ogbomoso road which supplies petroleum products to Ilorin had been repaired.

“So these marketers in Ilorin that closed their stations to create artificial scarcity because of bridging of fuel at Oke-Oyi depot will be disappointed.

“l want to use this medium to warn fuel marketers who sell the product above the official pump price to desist forth-with as anybody caught will face the wrath of the law,’’ he said. The reports shows that residents had besieged the few stations where the product was being sold.
