Court Sentences Mechanic To 2 Years Imprisonment For Drug Peddling

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a mechanic, Hafix Asimiyu, 31, to two years imprisonment for drug trafficking.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia sentenced the accused, after he pleaded guilty to the count charge of dealing in Indian hemp.

“The accused has pleaded guilty to the charge before this honourable court and he is hereby convicted as charged.

“The convict is accordingly sentenced to two years imprisonment beginning from Feb. 8, 2013 the date of arrest, or in the alternative to pay a fine of N50,000. “The drug exhibit is to be returned to the office of the NDLEA for destruction, if this judgement is not appealed within 30 days of delivery,” the judge held.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict, who resides at Nurudeen Bolade St., Oshodi Expressway, Lagos, was arraigned on Oct. 16, 2013, and had pleaded guilty.

The judge had, however, adjourned the case for review of facts and sentencing of the accused. The Prosecutor, Mr Kalu Orji, had told the court that the convict was arrested on Feb. 8, 2013 by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at his residence.

Orji said that about 1.4 kilogrammes of the narcotic was recovered from Asimiyu before his arrest. According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

NAN reports that the offence of drug trafficking attracts up to a term of life imprisonment on conviction. (NAN)
