An Iseyin Chief Magistrates’ Court, Oyo State, on Tuesday sentenced a 20-year old cyclist, Ogundayo Samuel, to three months imprisonment for reckless driving.
The police prosecutor, Mr Friday Sule, had told the court that Samuel, drove a Bajaj motorcycle, marked Lagos QT 753 FST, recklessly on Iseyin-Okeho road on Jan. 3. He said that the convict rode the motorcycle without regards to conditions of the road and considerations for other road users.
“The police arrested him and we discovered that he did not have riders’ permit, side mirrors and traffic light and with expired insurance papers,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the Road Traffic Law. Samuel, who was not represented by any counsel, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of reckless driving and driving without necessary documents.
He, however, appealed to the court to tamper justice with mercy, saying that he had learnt his lessons since his arrest by police. In her judgement, Chief Magistrate Abiola Richard, advised Samuel to have respect for human lives and also consider road conditions while operating.
She, therefore, sentenced him to three months imprisonment with an option of N30,000 fine. (Leadership)
