Insecurity: CSO Commends Sokoto For Installing CCTV

leadership A civil society group, the Caliphate Grassroots Movement, has commended the governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu M. Wamakko, for instaling  solar-powered traffic lights, close circuit television cameras (CCTV) and road name signage within Sokoto metropolis.

The group called on motorists in the state to obey traffic rules to ensure effective usage of the facilities.

The group said that the CCTV came at the appropriate time considering the security challenges facing most parts of  northern Nigeria.

In a statement by the group’s director of information, Mallam Dahiru Paki, the group expressed hope that the government will use the advantages offered by this CCTV to be a step ahead of criminals.

Oronsaya Report: FG Accept to Merges NAMA, NCAA, NIMET

The Federal Government, yesterday, accepted the recommendation that Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA); Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), be merged into a new body to be known as the Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA), while their respective enabling laws are to be amended accordingly to reflect the merger.

Osun PDP Governorship Pry Election: Omisore’s Emergence, Good For APC - Osun APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the emergence of Senator Iyiola Omisore as the gover
norship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the August 9 gubernatorial election as a good omen for the APC.

The APC said Omisore’s emergence made victory easier for the party, because the PDP has a candidate that lacks pedigree, credibility, responsibility and focus.

According to the APC in a press statement signed by its Director of Research, Publicity and Strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, on Sunday, the people of the state do not want a candidate with questionable character.
The APC described the primary election that produced Omisore’s candidature as typical of a party, which ground norm for political engagement is gangsterism.

Oyatomi said Omisore’s emergence was not unexpected, as his co-aspirant had to withdraw from the race because of the alleged threat from Omisore and his loyalists.

Residents of major towns in the State of Osun have started  panicking as Senator Iyiola Omisore emerged
the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the gubernatorial election in the state in August.

The people of the state have been following development in the party with keen interest as the party primary built up for about two weeks.

Findings showed that the people were concerned with the calibre of aspirant that would eventually emerge as the party candidate, believing it would have a lot with the populace before and during the election.

As the party announced its candidate after the primary, some residents expressed their pessimism on the peaceful conduct of the August 9 poll, particularly with the event leading to the build-up to the party primary election held last Saturday.

INEC Sets Up Committee On Constituency Review

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set up committee on review of constituencies, even as it planned to create more polling units before 2015 general elections.

This was made known on Monday by INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Nigeria clashes between Fulani herdsmen and vigilantes kill 72

Dozens of gunmen raided a meeting of youth vigilantes and local hunters who had gathered from different areas at the remote village of Yar Galadima, in northwest Zamfara state, on Saturday.

Oscar Pistorius begins giving evidence

 Oscar Pistorius has started giving evidence in his murder trial in South Africa.

He apologised to the family of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who he killed, saying he wanted to protect her.

The defence opened its case earlier today, calling a pathologist in an effort to cast doubt on the prosecution's assertion that Ms Steenkamp ate no more than two hours before the double-amputee runner killed her.

The evidence from Professor Jan Botha is critical to the defence because Pistorius has claimed the couple were in his bedroom by 10pm on February 13 2013, and any indication that they were awake much later could undermine the Olympian's account of the sequence of events.

Pistorius fatally shot Ms Steenkamp after 3am the next morning, saying he mistook her for an intruder in his home. The prosecution has argued that he intentionally killed her after an argument.

Abba Moro Begs Nigerians For forgiveness over NIS Recruitment

Interior Minister, Abba Moro, has taken full responsibility for the recent ill-fated recruitment into Nigeria Immigration Service which claimed 16 lives and begged for forgiveness from Nigerians, especially affected families.  

Abba Moro, who made the appeal at a media briefing, weekend, said his intention was genuine but lamented that the exercise turned tragic.

“I think that I will ordinarily ask Nigerians for understanding in this matter, understanding the intention, understanding the motive behind the whole thing of an open, transparent recruitment exercise.

“That is the first of its kind into the services of Interior Ministry that was intended primarily to give employment to Nigerians, irrespective of their backgrounds, connections, contacts in government or the business circle,” he said.

Increase in LASU fees violates right to education — SERAP

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has described the increase in tuition fees for students of Lagos State University, LASU, as unfair and retrogressive.

It called on the government to “urgently reverse the increase as we consider this to be manifestly unfair, unjust, discriminatory and retrogressive.”

In a letter dated April 4, 2014 and signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Tokunbo Mumuni, SERAP urged the state governor to use his position to reverse the fees, saying,”by reversing the tuition fees, your government will be demonstrating its sacred duty to promote equality in the society, and showing respect for international law requiring states to move towards free higher education when setting fees policy.”

Pedestrian killed as Luas and car crash

A woman in her 30s has been killed in a Dublin city centre collision involving a Luas tram and a car.

The pedestrian was struck by a car during the incident at the junction of Jervis Street and Abbey Street Upper at 8.45am, a Garda spokesman said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road is closed and the Luas red line is closed between Smithfield and Connolly.

Gardaí are investigating and forensic collision specialists are due to carry out an examination of the area.  (irishtimes)
