N41m theft: Judge threatens to revoke bail granted female stockbroker

Justice Lateefat Okunnu of an Ikeja High Court on Tuesday threatened to revoke the bail granted to a female stockbroker, Ibukun Adedayo.
Adebayo is standing trial over alleged N41 million theft. Okunnu gave the warning after the 32-year-old accused failed to appear in court for the continuation of her trial.

The accused's counsel, Mrs Folakemi Jegede, told the court that her client is on admission in the hospital. ``I will not allow that at another time, otherwise I will revoke the defendant's bail," the judge said. Okunnu directed the defence counsel to depose to an affidavit and attach the medical report which must be filed before the court within two weeks.

She consequently adjourned the matter to March 7, for mention. NAN reports that the EFCC arraigned Adebayo, a medical doctor turned stockbroker on Dec. 4, 2012. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the 24-count charge of stealing, forgery and uttering. She was granted a N10 million bail.

The EFCC counsel, Mr Takiyudeen Arabi, had alleged that Adedayo committed the offences while she was the head of Structured Financial Group of Ventures and Trust Ltd, an investment company. Arabi alleged that the accused had between June and November 2008, fraudulently debited N41 million from the account of one of the company's customers, Mrs Olajumoke Obafemi.

He said Adedayo had credited the money into the account of her personal company, Manamachi Technobuild Services, with Zenith Bank Plc. According to him, the accused also forged various e-mails purportedly sent by the complainant, instructing that the monies be transferred from her account.

He said Adedayo's alleged offences had contravened Sections 390, 467 and 468 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.
